Final cut of film

Reflexive Analysis

Reflexive Analyisis Masked Men is short sequence showing the distruption of the narrative, the opening medium close up shot of the garage door opening to a close up shot from a more cantered angle, plays on the traditional opening sequence ( long shot, medium shot, close up ) but with fast paced cut editing, this disorientates the audience. The aggresive editing was used to create the impression that who ever has opened the door is also as aggresive. The medium close up shot inside the car of the antagonist pulling down his balaclava, creates a stereotypical connotation of what his character is, the inconograpgy of balaclavas linking to; crime, villans and traditionally bank roobers was used so that the audience can imediately relate to what the character is. As he leaves, the shot of him pulling his balaclava down stereotypically suggest that he will be going to do bad things however, this also leaves the audiences un aware as to what it will be creating tension. The contrast of camera shots in stasis; with the very close and high engergy road shots, creates a juxtapostion of speed that could confuse or dissorientate the veiwer, suggesting that the antagonist in the car is unpredictable and dangerous because he is going so fast. Adding to this the jumpcuts between different area, going a different speed, directions and different road markings, making it harder to focus on one particular area of the shot this also hightens the uncertainty of what the antagonist is doing. close up shots of the antagonist turning the steering wheel and changing gear, suggests that he does this often, the speed at which we see him drive could also suggest he is fearless and isn't scared of dying adding too the dangerousness of his character. The close up shot of the wing mirror reflecting what is behind the car on the surface shows a clear road with nothing else in the way, i used this shot because it could be argued that he has nothing left to live for, the mirror not only looks back at where he has come from but could also look back at his past suggesting a bleak and empty life. To create a more frantic and intense viewing experience, similar to what you would expect on a roller coaster i sped the driving sequences up, so that i could draw the audience in and let them feel as if they are going to crash, the trees and cars that come flying past , could also dissorientate as the speed of them coming past the screen distrupts the view you see. Th blurred windscreen showing an ambulance driving infront could also suggest the intentions of the antagonist, as ambulances are inconagraphical of hospitals and injured people, this could suggest that causing harm is what the antagonist has set out to do. It could also be argued that this shot could be polysemic. Other than suggesting that he is about to cause harm to another person, the distorted view of what the antagonists future will be, linking to the shot of the car mirror showing his past, the blurred windscreen could represent his future as a criminal, a blurrred and unclear state To make a very frantic but seamless editing pattern, i used rthymic editing, using Beware of the Dog by Kubus and BangBang, it was easier to make the shots work benificially, the 'cockney' voice of the singer , from audience feedback " created a british crime drama feel, similar to that of snatch and Train Spotting". As the song's pace increases and decreases i used the juxtapostion of in car views (so the audience is put in the place of the driver) with the slow verses and fast bumper camera shots of the road rushing past with the faster pace to further increase that sense of speed. The lyrics " These arent tattoo's these are warning signs" and " beware of the dog" relate to the antagonist unpredcitability and volitile manner, being the passengers to his extreme driving we are un aware of his actions creating the impression he is dangerous, like the stereotypical connotation of dogs. The fade to black, createes the connotation of time passing, the tilt upwards to low shot of the man running could suggest vunerability, with the camera having "preying" connotations however this also could suggest dominance as the audience is placed near his feet making him the dominant figure. The black hoodie that he is wearing, also connotes evil, suggesting that he is an atagonist as well. As we are introduced to the plan of what the Antagonists are upto, the slang and swearing that is used could suggest them being lower class citizens, this is because sayings such as " Been sat here like a Prick" and " He's on Clive Sully" suggest that this is common slang of the area and the informality of the speech is self could relate to gang culture. Like the fade to black i used to separate the car scene from the plan, i used an over take to also create that metaphorical connotation of time passing, the sound of the car's exausts coupled with a low buzzing noise, puts this scene on edge as it creates a creepy and unerving feeling. It also forshadowing the scene to come. The close up shot of the car pulling into the car park, creates a suspense atmosphere that is hightened by the buzzing noise. I split the shots using " black film" so that it simulates a blink, which could disorientate the viewers, creating a more suspencing feeling. To create dramatic irony, i juxtaposed shots of the antagonist and the little boy to add to the suspence, this also creates a juxtapostion of good and evil as well as binary opposites, as we see the Antagonist in his car, the balaclaava and lack of light inside the car juxtaposes with the bring and open space with in which the little boy is standing. As the little boy is riding the esculator, the camera is placed above his head creating alot of space around him, As we are not introduced to the character using a traditional shot pattern this again creates a more suspencing atmosphere. This shot also creates a sence of vunerability as the negative space around him leaves him looking alone and vunerable. As the buzzing sound becomes louder i made the cut sequence of the shots quicker to create a hightened emotion and to catch the audience off gaurd. Instead of making this sequence violent, i used sound and quick cut patterns to make it more gripping. I specifically used a boy for this sequence to grab the attention of parents as the casual public place which he is taken from is part of everyday life, this draws the parental audience in as they can relate to the characters and surroundings.

Clothing


For my film many of the clothing that the actors will be wearing will be black, this is because back is the colour that  is represented as evil or bad, and will be a very good audience signifier when they come on screen. It will also be used as a binary opposite to the  'good'  to further increases the divide between antagonist and protagonist.



Using a binary opposite for my antagonist and protagonist will work very well in dividing the characters and  will make it easier to recognise as opposites.
As white, or light colours represent 'good' or a happy character, this is the perfect colour to use for my protagonist as he isn't a bad person and will be the person that the audience needs to connect with.

Screenplay


Ext.  Mid-day in the Inner City

Lunch Time in the Dark and dingy alleyway, black car , with engine running, sits quietly as  its driver and passenger talk about their plans


Int.  The black Car
   Two young gentlemen, all in black, very informal and rough ( criminals )  Both of the same age
 


 
Jimmy: How long is this ‘gonna’ take, we’ve been here fucking ages.



Michael: (chuckles to himself)


Fuck knows!, as long as we get this little person


I’m not really bothered how long it’ll take.


You brought anything??.


JIMMY: “ put’s on girls tights while talking”


cause I have, got my gun, and you know … head gear


don’t want anyone knowing what we’re getting up to


Ext:   Black car driving through city scape, towards a car park. Same gritty criminals inside  vehicle, except with ski masks on to hide their faces.


 

Michael: “ laughs” No way am I driving… in the middle of town

with you, and them

Jimmy: shut your face
(cuts him off before he finishes)

I have a phone call

“phone rings”

(Picks up his phone and places it to his ear)


Hello?... yea yea we’re here don’t worry,

(Laughs) yea he’s here too, yea don’t worry

bye.

 He's such a prick

Jimmy:  woah woah woah !  what are you saying ? !
                  That's the boss you're talking about

                      you wanna get yourself killed ?
Michael:   So what!   he is !   he's a big fat wanker
                   i don't like how he's been here five minuets
                   and can boss us around


immy: Just calm it will you
 

Michael:   i don't like his face, i don't like his clothes and i especially don't like his ugly fucking irish voice
Jimmy: well he's second in command and our boss, soo you're gunna have to like it, Got that ? !

Michael:   yea whatever

     Child is stolen,  vilans in the car speed off out of the car park and on to the main road, the child is suspisiously quiet

Influential Videos

  No Country For Old Men uses dim lighting, and the manipulation of sound to create a very tense atmosphere in the scene. As the antagonist, turns the hallway lights off, the build up to the clash feels like a very long time, and is a great use of suspence, in my film, as the atagonist watches the protagonist, i will use the same sort of suspence to manipuate my audience.




 Because most of the conversation will be inside of a car, this scene in Lock Stock shows the type of angles i could use, it is also very fast paced between crosscuts
 the point of view shots from inside Steve Mcqueens car as he is driving, i will use it  to show the gangsters driving round the town
leading up to the task of stealing the child, most of the scene will be watching for him, similar to this scene in scarface, discussing the plan while on the way to it, the use of point of view shots are what i might concider using for my own film.
